Evergreen orders ten 23,000-TEU ships from 3 yards for US$1.6 billion

    2019-09-16

TAIWAN's Evergreen Line has confirmed that it is to purchase ten 23,000-TEU ships from three separate shipyards at a cost of between US$1.4 billion and $1.6 billion. The carrier no longer intends to charter up to 11 mega box ships.

The shipping line will order six ships from South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries, and two ships each from China's Jiangnan Shipyard and Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding, reported Singapore's Splash 247.

Evergreen said it came to this decision after further evaluation of its fleet expansion plans, and believes that the newbuilding orders will further accelerate fleet optimisation.

The newbuilds will be the biggest vessels in the carrier's fleet and will be deployed on routes to Europe and west America.

According to Alphaliner, Evergreen's existing fleet comprises 206 ships with a total capacity of 1.3 million TEU, making it the seventh largest ocean liner in the world. The company also has an orderbook of 58 ships with a total capacity of 336,544 TEU, equivalent to one-quarter of its existing fleet capacity.
